Common Pet Problems

By June 19, 2020February 19th, 2021No Comments

At Animal Wellness Center of Bonita, we understand how much you love and enjoy your pets, after all, we’re pet owners too. And that means we also understand how frustrating they can sometimes be. Animals have their own specific personalities and quirks, but some annoying habits seem to be almost universal. If your Bonita Springs pet is perfectly well-behaved and a total angel, you’re a very lucky pet parent. For the rest of us, here’s a look at some of the most common pet problems, and what you can do about them.

Messy Cat Meals

Lots of cats like to toss their food on the floor or pick it up in their mouth and drop it there to eat. It might be they are just playing with their food, or it might be the plastic food bowl. Bacteria can grow on plastic that can make food taste unpleasant. Try a metal or ceramic bowl instead. You can also try different cat foods.

Cat Scratch Fever

Cats like to scratch on things. They do this to mark out their territory and to sharpen their claws by wearing away the outer layer. One veterinary solution is to have them declawed. The other is to give them a safe place to claw. Buy both an upright scratching post and a layer of the carpet so they’ll have a choice.

Doorbell Dog Barking

Dogs are protective of their pack, you and your family, and they bark when they hear the doorbell to scare away the intruder. Try slowly weaning them away from the habit with treats to distract them as you ring the doorbell, and be patient, it takes time.

Shedding Woes

Pets shed naturally, but excessive shedding can be caused by a poor diet, stress, and dry skin. Daily grooming will help, and there are veterinary dietary supplements to combat dry skin that your vet can recommend. You can also add a few drops of olive oil to their food.
