Importance of Pet Dental Care

Most people are aware of how important regular dental checkups and cleanings are in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth. However, many people aren’t aware of the importance of good oral health care for their pet. Just like humans, pet dental care is critical in maintaining your pet’s overall health and well-being. Visiting your veterinarian for dog dental and cat dental needs is essential at preventing serious, life-threatening diseases. Here is some information on the importance of dental care for pets in Bonita Springs.

.

Periodontal Disease

There are a number of health issues that can occur when your pet’s teeth and gums aren’t properly cared for. Just like in humans, periodontal disease affects the areas around teeth, including the soft tissues, gums and jawbone. Most cats and dogs have some evidence of periodontal disease by the time they reach the age of three. If periodontal disease in pets goes untreated, it can lead to inflammation, bleeding gums, bad breath and tooth loss. Periodontal disease may also be painful for pets, which can interfere with their appetite, causing unhealthy weight loss.

Heart Disease

Unfortunately, without veterinary visits for dog dental and cat dental, pets can develop heart disease as a result of periodontal disease. Veterinarian studies have shown that dogs and cats with periodontal disease have a risk that is six times higher than in pets without periodontal disease of getting heart disease. Routine cleanings and exams will help to prevent the risk of inflammation, which ultimately leads to the risk of heart disease in pets.

Tips to Prevent Dental Disease in Pets

Along with regular veterinary care, there are a few things you can do at home to help keep your pet’s mouth, teeth and gums clean and healthy. It’s important to brush your pet’s teeth on a regular basis. It’s recommended that you talk with your veterinarian for suggestions on which toothpaste and the best type of toothbrush to use for your pet. Other things you can do include:

  • Give pets dental treats
  • Offer chew toys that will help to scrape plaque from the surface of teeth
  • Make sure pets get plenty of fresh, clean water to help clean food from teeth after eating

It is extremely important to schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings with your veterinarian. With routine veterinary exams, the vet will be able to identify potential problems and recommend treatment much quicker.
